Simple Reader is an Android and iOS audio player provided by NA Industries. Privacy contact: simplereader@xxiconsulting.com.
Audio and local data
Audio selected through the system file picker is copied into private storage on your device. Simple Reader stores your library, bookmark positions, playback progress, and settings on that device. The app does not upload audio recordings or audio filenames. Listening and local bookmarking work without a Google connection. We do not include advertising or run our own analytics service. Optional Google sign-in uses Google’s SDK, as described below.
Optional Google bookmark sync
If you select Connect Google, Google asks you to choose an account and authorize access to Simple Reader’s own application-data folder in Google Drive. The app requests the `drive.appdata` permission, which allows access to its own hidden app data rather than your ordinary Drive files.
Sync stores audio content fingerprints (SHA-256 identifiers), durations, bookmark identifiers and timestamps, bookmark types, saved listening positions, and a random installation identifier in your Google Drive app data. Google provides your account email address and Drive account identifier so Simple Reader can identify the connected account. The account information is stored locally. On Android, access tokens are used in memory. On iOS, Google’s Sign-In SDK stores its sign-in session in the system Keychain so it can refresh authorization. Tokens are never placed in app logs or app preferences. The iOS SDK also requests standard Google identity, email, and basic-profile scopes; Simple Reader uses the email to identify the connected account and does not use names or profile photos.
On iOS, Google’s Sign-In SDK also declares collection of account contact details (name, email address, and phone number), approximate location, user and device identifiers, other usage data, and other data types. Google declares these uses for authentication and app functionality, and for analytics for certain identifiers, usage, and other data. Its manifest declares no tracking. These are Google’s SDK practices; Simple Reader does not use your name, phone number, or profile photo, and does not run its own analytics service.
The app sends these requests directly to Google over HTTPS. We do not run a separate server that receives your bookmarks. Google processes data under its own privacy policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy.
All manual bookmarks are retained. Sync keeps the newest two automatic bookmarks for each matching audio file and preserves the furthest saved resume position. Audio files must be imported separately on each device; identical file contents are matched even if the files have different names.
Optional iCloud bookmark sync on iOS
You can choose iCloud instead of Google. CloudKit uses the Apple Account already signed into your device and stores the same bookmark metadata in your private iCloud database. It uses an app-specific account identifier to keep caches separate and pauses sync if the account changes. Audio and filenames are never uploaded. Apple processes iCloud data under its privacy policy: https://www.apple.com/legal/privacy/.
Only one sync service is connected at a time. Switching providers keeps local bookmarks, which will be merged into the newly selected cloud account. iCloud bookmarks are available to your Apple devices; Google sync can also share bookmarks with Android. Disabling iCloud sync keeps local bookmarks and existing cloud data. To remove cloud data, disconnect all devices first and use your Apple Account’s iCloud storage controls for Simple Reader.
Your controls and data deletion
Sync is off until you choose and enable a cloud provider. You can disconnect in Simple Reader’s Settings. Disconnecting stops future sync on this device. Android also attempts to revoke the app’s Google authorization; iOS signs out locally. Disconnecting it keeps local bookmarks and the existing Drive copy. If the device is offline, you can also remove authorization from your Google Account’s third-party connections page.
To delete cloud bookmark data, first disconnect Simple Reader on all devices, then open Google Drive Settings → Manage apps → Simple Reader → Options → Delete hidden app data. Disconnecting first prevents another connected device from uploading its retained bookmarks again. You can also remove Simple Reader’s access through your Google Account settings.
Removing audio from the app removes that device’s imported audio copy and associated local bookmarks. Cloud bookmarks remain and can be restored by reimporting the same file while sync is connected. Clearing Android app storage or uninstalling removes local audio, settings, and bookmark caches. Original files selected for import are unaffected.
Google user data
Simple Reader uses Google user data only to provide the bookmark-sync feature requested by the user. We do not sell that data or use it for advertising. Simple Reader’s use of information received from Google APIs follows the Google API Services User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements.
